| During the Chinese Cultural Revolution most Tibetan Bön monasteries were destroyed. Just how many of these monasteries existed at the time is unknown. However, a recent survey identified 217 Bonpo monasteries as being currently located in the People's Republic of China. Of these, 90 are in the Tibet Autonomous Region; the remainder are located to the east of that region. Eighty-three are located in Sichuan province, 35 in Qinghai, and nine in Gansu. |
